President Bush today will unveil a national strategy to tackle bird flu in a bid to reduce the chance of a widespread outbreak among people, White House press secretary Scott McClellan said. "It's something we need to take seriously," he said. "That's why the president has been leading the way." So far, the deadly strain of bird flu disease does not appear to infect people easily, but it does appear to have a high mortality rate of about 50 percent.
"By the end of the year, more than 4 million courses of antiviral treatment should be on hand, though that number is far lower than what the World Health Organization has urged."
